Painting en plein air is an experience that is as challenging as it is rewarding.  Losing oneself in the moment is the epitome of what plein air painting is all about! Forgetting bugs, sunburn, wind, rain and exhaustion in order to lay down that special moment in time is the fulfillment of hard work and exceptional effort on the part of the artist. Plein air painting is not for the feint of heart. Yet, the experience has allowed me the opportunity to hone my observation skills, a critical necessity for successful art, while at the same time delving into what is akin to a spiritual experience! Painting outdoors was made popular by the French Impressionists, who were determined to capture the myriad colors of nature within the light and shadow patterns that they studied 'en plein air'. I have been juried into plein air competitions around the country and have garnered some awards from judges I admire along the way. All of the paintings below were painted on location, some with a brush, and some with palette knife only.
